Indian Government Plans to offer delayed Aakash tablet free to students

The Indian government plans to offer the low-cost Aakash UbiSalte Android tablet to Indian students for free. Until now, the high-demand tablet was marketed to students at a government-subsidized price of roughly $35 (roughly $70 at full retail).

Minister of Human Resources and Development Kapil Sibal announced the plan at a Semiconductor Association Summit last week as an effort to bridge the “digital divide” in India.  Minister Sibal has been under fire for several delays and device glitches (at the same time, he has been under fire for social media censorship) since the device was announced in October but Sabil is confident that the ambitious low-cost tablet program will ultimately be a success.

Insurance Company Aviva pilots Tablets for risk assessment

Insurance giant Aviva Risk Management is piloting RIM Blackberry Playbooks with its risk assessment team in the UK. Each tablet will come preloaded with an app called SOLAR that allows risk surveyors to create assessment reports on-site using sliders and drop-down fields.  Aviva developed the app with financial software companiesFormicary Collaboration Group and Float. The app supports images and offline use.

Risk Solutions Managers Ted Kenrick said Aviva chose the poor-selling Blackberry Playbooks because they could be easily integrated with existing administrative and security frameworks that had already been designed for Blackberry smartphones.  Aviva was concerned that iPads would not allow for secure data governance.

The pilot program will continue through this winter with a larger roll-out expected in early 2012.

This infograhpic by Kensignton demonstrates that the cost of  lost or stolen technology goes far beyond the cost of the product. The real cost can come from the subsequent data breach. With more enterprises interested in buying tablets and smartphones, security should be considered. Be aware that the stats were not verified and provided by a security company.

Dog Gym uses iPads for scheduling

Zoom Room is a dog training and canine social club with eight locations nationwide and three more coming soon to Denver, Santa Monica and San Diego. When a pooch owner signs up, they’re given an ID card and dog collar tag with barcodes. Zoom Room purchased 3G iPads with barcode scanners to replace check-in desks. It’s such an easy process that dog owners can do it themselves. Now, Zoom Room staff can spend less time on check-in and check-out and more time on answering questions, selling products and chatting with dogs.

In an interview with Mashable, Zoom Room COO Mark Van Wye says the benefits of tablet adoption go beyond easier scheduling and point of-sales. “All of our nationwide locations are required to use a 3G-enabled iPad model. In the case of an Internet outage — or even a power outage — we can still run every single aspect of our business from the iPad.” Wye adds, “Thanks to the long battery life, our entire business can run a full day with no hardware and no electricity — just the iPad.”

More and more, we’re seeing iPads and tablets being creatively used in the wild. We want to see how your favorite business, school or organization is using tablets. We’ve enabled community posts so now you can submit your photos and videos to our tumblr blog.
Here is an example of what we’re looking for. Fab Cafe, a small artsy coffee shop in the East Village of New York, uses an iPad 1 as a cash register. The barista said “it’s the way of the future, man.”

First iPad Rental Service Booms in Madrid; Eyes International Expansion

When

Francisco Pena learned that a Jetstar airline was renting iPads to passengers, he wondered why that kind of service was only offered to airline passengers. That was ten months ago and since he has teamed up with co-founder Juan Gomez to start the first iPad rental service called PadInTheCity.

The Madrid-based company rents 3G iPads for 25 euros (about 35 dollars) a day.  In addition, PadInTheCity places a hold on your credit card for 390 euros (540 dollars) in case the iPad is not returned. iPads (both 1 and 2) come with leather cases and unlimited internet access.  The company will deliver you an iPad wherever you are in Madrid. Originally targeting tourists visiting Madrid, business travelers and conference attendees have become a major part of their business.

Business is booming. The company started with 10 iPads and, ten months later, is renting 250. According to Smartplanet.com, PadInTheCity also has rental contracts with Madrid hotels and are in negotiations with two airlines. The company plans to expand to other cities soon including Libson, New York and Paris. Gomez and Pena are seeking funding from angel investors and venture capitalists.

Here at Tab Adapt, we’re suckers for tablet inforgraphics. Below is an excellent inforgraphic via the Pew Research Center. While it doesn’t directly relate to organizational tablet computing, we think it’s important for businesses to understand who is using tablets and how they are using them. For example, tablet users tend to be more educated (not necessarily “better educated” as Peter Thiel argues) and earn more money.   Today, 11% of US adults use tablets and 77% of these use them daily. Even more impressive, tablet users spend a daily average of 1 hour and 35 minutes on their tablets.
What statistic was most shocking in this inforgraphic?
